Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a Nursery?

Yes. Children of all ages are always welcome in worship at First United Methodist Church. However, we also offer a volunteer-staffed Nursery for infants and toddlers. Our volunteers all complete Safe Sanctuary training and undergo criminal background screening to ensure the safety of your children. You may occasionally find student helpers in the Nursery who have also completed our Safe Sanctuary training along with Red Cross or other child care certification. The Nursery is located on the Main Level, just across the hallway along the west side of the sanctuary.

What does “family-friendly worship” mean?

“Family-friendly” means that we are striving to make worship an experience that people of all ages living in all kinds of families find meaningful and worthwhile. Young or old(er), single or married, we all belong in the church, and at First United Methodist Church, we know that worship is the place where we can best learn to become God’s family together. So whoever you are, whatever your life circumstances, Family-Friendly Worship at First UMC is for you!

What if my children are squirmy or noisy?

Great! God put the wiggle and the giggle in kids. We believe God is pleased when children are allowed to be children — especially in worship. One of the most important things we all (kids and adults) need to “get” out of worship is the experience of being God’s family together. At the same time, we understand that it can be hard for parents to worship with the wiggles in the next seat.

What should I wear?

Clothes would be nice! We want you to be comfortable. If that means you want to wear a tie, feel free to do so, if jeans go for it, you’ll be welcome, no matter what you wear.

History

First United Methodist Church has a long and rich history in Greenville Ohio. The church has experienced tragedy and triumph: destruction by fire, the glory of new bells, and the hard work of remodeling.

1818 Methodist circuit riders served parts of Preble, Darke, Miami, & Montgomery Counties
1833 first frame church built across Sycamore St from present church
1852 brick church built, replacing the former one
1870 brick church remodeled and enlarged
1874 (or 1875) bell tower added
June 16, 1895 fire destroyed the building
April 21, 1896 cornerstone of present church laid at 4th St & Sycamore St
1907 new bells installed in bell tower
1920’s basement completed and kitchen added
1958 education wing added
1961 sanctuary remodeled
1998 elevator and additional bathrooms added
2015 flooding in the basement, resulting in current remodeling of classrooms

The church is never static, always changing. That’s because the church isn’t a building – the church is the people who gather to share life, grow in faith, and practice ministry together. First United Methodist Church is a hometown, community church. We work with strategic partners in Greenville and Darke County to promote the good of our community and world. We hope you’ll consider being a part of the history we’re making together today!
